150 West Jefferson has played a key role in revitalizing downtown Detroit. The 450-foot, 30-story, mixed-use building is sited prominently along the Detroit riverfront with views of Canada. It has 500,000 square feet of office space, a 10,000-square-foot restaurant, street-level retail space and parking.
Shaw Electric Co. was involved from the outset on this design assist project. The project was constructed on a city block with no setback and no land to store materials or stage equipment. So we had our work cut out coordinating the contractors.
The mechanical subcontractor, Shaw Electric, and Blount Engineering met weekly over six months as mechanical loads were revised and the electrical distribution system was reworked to eliminate a penthouse substation while retaining redundant bus feeders through the building. The redesign saved mechanical space and resulted in a significant cost savings.
